Comprehensive insurance isn’t a requirement in every state. Still, the benefits and peace of mind you get by having it is worth the investment. Here are a few reasons you should consider having comprehensive auto insurance.

What is comprehensive auto insurance?

In a nutshell, comprehensive insurance covers your vehicle or another vehicle you may be driving from losses resulting from an incident other than a collision. For example, this coverage would kick in if your car were stolen or damaged in a fire. This is a form of coverage you can get with your regular auto insurance coverage.

What Are the benefits of comprehensive auto insurance?

Acts of God: If you live in a flood zone or an area of the world that experiences hail or any other type of potentially damaging natural occurrence, comprehensive coverage will cover any damage your car may suffer should it be subjected to one. Regular auto insurance will not even consider covering this type of damage.

Theft or break-in: Whether or not you live in an area susceptible to auto theft or someone breaks into your vehicle, comprehensive auto insurance is still a great piece of peace of mind. Comprehensive coverage will cover your losses if you are a victim of either of these crimes.

Note: It is important to inform your insurance provider of any aftermarket equipment installed on your vehicle. The insurance provider may not cover the loss without prior knowledge of this equipment.

The animal kingdom – The odds of hitting an animal while driving isn’t as slim as many people would think. Thousands of animals, both wild and tamed, are struck by cars every year. The resulting damage to the vehicles can be severe. Comprehensive insurance will cover this type of damage.

Disabled car – If your car becomes disabled for any reason, comprehensive auto insurance may, depending on your policy, cover any cost you may incur for alternate forms of transportation while you’re waiting for your car to be fixed.

Note – Some insurance providers require that you must wait a 48-hour period from the time your car becomes disabled before this benefit kicks in.

Even if your car isn’t worth all that much, it’s nice to know that you’ll have just about everything covered should, God forbid, something happens to it. Your state may not require that you maintain comprehensive coverage of your vehicle(s). No matter how you look at it, though, it is definitely worth the financial investment.

Overall, there is not one bad thing to say about comprehensive auto insurance coverage. The benefits you get by not having to deal with exorbitant out-of-pocket expenses, should you need this type of coverage, far outweigh the added premium costs. If you own or drive a car, you really should have comprehensive auto insurance coverage on it.
